Firewood Supervisor
(Full Time Seasonal)
Reporting to the Forestry Manager, the Firewood Supervisor oversees the firewood yards, equipment and crew and participates in the production of firewood and firewood products, involving the use of saws and other equipment to cut and split wood, dump truck and dump trailer and other heavy equipment for the transport of firewood products. This position can require physically demanding work.
Main duties:
• Oversee the production of firewood and firewood products at three sites in Nanaimo area; Eaton Yard, Phoenix Yard and various cutblock locations.
• Involves overseeing and managing a crew of 2-6 workers in a safe and efficient manner.
• Will include youth work experience management from time to time
• The supervisor will direct operations, tools, machinery, vehicles, materials, and the workforce. Equipment includes: chainsaws, wood splitter, wood processor, dump truck, dump trailer, bobcat skidsteer, forklift
• Ensure proper maintenance and cleaning of the work sites and equipment.
• Prepare and enable pick up and/or delivery of firewood products to our customers as required.
• Ensure tracking of incoming logs and supplies and outgoing products delivered or loaded out (load and tracking slips)
• Supervisor will ensure safe work practices are in effect ensuring compliance with safety policies and procedures that may be required for our operating locations and equipment and personnel involved
• Fire hazard and abatement will be managed by the supervisor ensuring compliance with fire hazard risks
• Work demands include multi-tasking to direct crew, plan work, balance
labour and tools, scheduling, equipment repair, ensure safe work
procedures, and production.
• Supervisor must keep a work journal of activities, discussions, discipline, working
conditions and have it available when requested.
• Supervisor will be required to provide weekly and monthly reports which will include but not be limited to; Safety updates and reporting, production reporting, inventory management, equipment reports and staff reports
Employment requirements:
• Must be willing and able to withstand the rigors of manual labour.
• Must be willing to able to adhere to safety standards in work practice.
• Must be willing and able to supervise a team of 2-6 workers.
Key Competencies:
• Supervisor or management experience
• First Aid training preferred.
• Chainsaw use and training preferred.
• Equipment operator training and experience preferred (firewood processor, wood splitter, dump truck, skidsteer, forklift).
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, team-player and leader.
• Strong desire to learn and improve.
